In Kiel, the separation of waste is done with bins in 4 different colors:

Packaging in yellow bin / yellow bag: Plastic packaging (Plastic bags, carrier bags, foil, wrapping, plastic fruit nets, plastic bottles, plastic tubes, washing-up liquid and other cleaning product bottles, shampoo and shower gel bottles, yoghurt and margarine tubs, meat and fruit trays, styrene packaging, etc.); Composite packaging (Juice and milk cartons, coffee vacuum packs and other packaging material made from composite materials); Metal packaging (Food cans, tea and biscuit tins, metal lids, aluminium foil, metal tubes, etc.); Packaging made from natural materials (Fruit crates, wooden cigar boxes, fabric bags, etc.).

Paper and cardboard in blue bin: Newspapers, magazines, books, catalogues, brochures, writing paper, copy books, computer printing paper, wrapping paper, cardboard boxes (folded), cartons, etc.

Biodegradable waste in brown bin: Kitchen scraps / gardening waste (Tea leaves and bags, coffee grinds (with paper filter), egg shells, scraps of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, kitchen paper, cut flowers, potted plants, garden waste including weeds, tree branches, hedge cuttings, leaves, lawn clippings, moss, biodegradable cat litter, etc.).

Refuse bin in black bin: Use this bin only for waste that cannot be recycled! Cold ash, cigarette butts, wallpaper, carpet cut-offs, ceramic and porcelain, nappies, vacuum cleaner bags, etc. Please do not waste resources and return all recyclable waste to our recycling system by placing it in the correct bin.

Glass: For glass disposal, there are special containers around the city. You can find pictures of it in our gallery. Please, choose the correct place: buntglas (colorful glass) and weißglas (incolor glass).
