The official app of the German Trains (Deutsche Bahn in German, or abbreviated DB).

Öffi

Useful throughout Germany, you need to indicate that the bus maps and routes to be used are from NAH.SH or the Deutsche Bahn, you can do this by entering “Preferences”. Only available for Android.

NAH.SH

The official bus routes of the Schleswig-Holstein (the name of the State of which Kiel is capital).

Getting around the city

When you get in Kiel’s train station, you can either walk front to the entrance where you will see taxis, or exit through the left and you will see the bus stops.

In Germany, the public transport timetables are available in a variety of apps. If you know the address of your destination, you can set as start point “Kiel Hbf” (Kiel train station) and then as arriving point the address. Then the options as of direct buses or connections will show up.

Once you are registered as a student in the International Center and pay your fees, you will receive a CAU university card with which you can get in the buses for free, during the validity period of it. Otherwise, the single ticket costs 2.50€.

Important: the winter semester 2016/2017 will be the first semester when the CAU card will be issued, we had a different system until now, so you might find that there will be an adjusting period through the first months. We apologize for that and for now, we can only provide the official information that has been given about the usage of the card.

HOW TO USE THE BUSES

You can only enter the bus at the driver’s door, where you then have to show your card to the driver. The only exception to this is at the bus stops on campus, where no one checks tickets and everyone enters and exits from whichever door suits their better.

APPS

For the case of Kiel, this are the apps available, you can choose the one that suits you best:

TIP:

We have been told (but we did not know when we arrived) that if you show the admission letter, you can get the bus for free, so you could try asking the bus driver.

TIP:

Take into account that some bus stops have the same name but are sometimes located in both streets of a crossing road. If you are making a connection, make sure that the number of the bus you are connecting with is shown on the information sheets located in the bus stop you are.
