Bank Account

Depending on your country of origin and your Visa requirements you may have to prove that you can finance your studies. One of the ways you can prove you are financially capable of supporting your stay in Germany is opening a blocked account. There is an example here.

There are many banks (Deutsche Bank, Sparkasse Kiel, Sparda Bank, Citi Bank, etc) in the city center, near Hauptbahnhof (center train station).

Here you can have some options (in "Filialsuche" / "Filialfinder" you can put your address and search for the nearest):

Commerzbank

Deutsche bank

Evangelische Bank

Förde Sparkasse

Kieler Volksbank

Santander

Sparda-Bank

Targobank

Ther better way to choose is going to some of them in your first days in Kiel and asking for details about fees and what is included. In most cases, banks have special accounts without maintenance fees for students and people under the age of 30.

Ask details about the procedure to transfer money, including the taxes, if they provide information in English (including the website and cash machine (ATM)), available cards, and others that you think are important.

You can get cash and print your account transactions using your bank card. You also have the online access to do the transactions from the Internet. But, do not forget to ask about these details before choosing your bank!
